Okay so I have finally got round to uploading pictures of my finished cushion (bolster cushion will follow). The trims would obviously look better machine sewn together, however I do not own a sewing machine so everything is hand sewn.
Here is how I made it:
Step 1:
Cut the following strips of fabric for the front of your cushion: 43x17cm (17 x 6 3/4in), 43 x16cm(17x6 1/4in) 43x10cm (17 x 4in) 43x21cm(17 x 8 1/2 in) 43x12cm(17 x 4 3/4in)
Step 2:
Arrange the strips on a flat surface in the order you want to stitch them together. Pin them together right sides facing.
Step 3:
Sew the strips together with a 1.5cm (3/4in) seam allowance, pressing open your seam as you go along. Once you have stitched all five pieces together, press on the right side.
Step 4:
Choose your trims (this part is optional) and cut them into 43cm(17in) lengths. Lay the trims along the seams, then pin and stitch in place. I have used baby pink ribbon and white crochet lace trim. You can choose do more or less trim.
Step 5:
Cut two pieces of fabric 62x32cm (24 1/2in x 12 1/2 in) for the envelope back. This allows for a 1.5cm(3/4in) seam and hem. I have used cream felt.
Step 6:
Take one of the fabric pieces and lay it over the bottom of your patchwork peice with the right sides facing. The raw edges should all match up, with the hemmed edge roughly near the middle. Lay the second piece of backing fabric over the top in the same way, so the two backing peices overlap. Pin and sew around the edge with a 1.5cm (3/4in) seam.
Step 7:
Trim the corners, turn through to the right side and press.
I then added a few touches by adding some self cover buttons to the back and 3 button holes but this part is also entirely optional.
